The client

Synaptor is changing the way SMEs in hazardous industries ensure the safety of their people and the environment with innovative mobile and web apps.

The directors of Synaptor collectively have more than 65 years of experience providing health, safety and environmental consulting services to large international clients. They are excited to bring this experience to small and medium-sized enterprises in a fit-for-purpose package with the Synaptor tools.

The relationship

When Justin approached us with the idea of the Synaptor applications, he was very clear that teaming up with a local development company was of great importance to him. Finding someone who was available to meet and discuss ideas, who believed in the project and who had the capability to deliver numerous applications with short turn around times were the main goals. Justin was keen to provide feedback and listen to advice, mainly facilitated at our local offices where all parties could have input.

The products

The Synaptor suite of applications consists of iPhone and Android applications (free), a website and a set of web modules (paid). The current offering covers safety observations, maps and training management. Each component has a web module and complementary mobile application. Synaptor are launching with the existing set of products, but there are plans to add more after launch.

The challenges

Over the course of building the tools, we pushed boundaries of development that we hadn't previously encountered. This was the first time we had utilised push notifications in a client project, the first project where we facilitate recurring payments and our first foray into Android development.

Push notifications

Synaptor Maps relies heavily on push notifications. For this we turned to the Urban Airship API (from their website: "We power the world’s most successful mobile apps"). Implementing the Urban Airship API into both the iPhone and Android application made handling notifications simple, but it will also scale as the audience grows without any extra planning or work at our end.

Recurring payments

In order to charge a recurring subscription payment, we partnered with Chargify to handle the account and billing components. Within Synaptor you can upgrade (or downgrade) and add new modules to your account. All of this is bundled in a recurring cost, which is seamless thanks to the Chargify API.

Android

Experienced in iPhone development, this was our first foray onto the Android platform. We have built the mobile applications using a combination of PhoneGap and our own native code. This enables us to rapidly deploy the applications onto different platforms if the need arises. The applications still utilise custom native code for certain elements, but overall we feel this was the best direction for Synaptor and their audience.
